As fate would have it, after completing my 2020 ‘Kohle’ project, I moved into an apartment situated on the banks of the river Ahr, in the spa town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. When the catastrophic flood of July 14, 2021 occurred, I found myself right at its epicentre… Having been preoccupied for the past few years with the nearby brown-coal open-cast mine, I now find myself personally impacted by the climate-changing consequences of that industry. For me it's remarkable and thought provoking how the images of both situations echo each other…
